CHILD CARE AND AYURVEDA

A child with proper mental and physical health is a blessing to his home as well as society. “KAUMARA BHRITYA” is a branch of ayurveda which deals maintenance of health and treatment of different types of ailments from birth to adolescents.

From Birth to 5 yrs:

Infants (1 - 3 months):

A newborn baby doesn't have immunity to live in this earth. So, he should be given mother’s breast milk upto 1 – 2 yrs to give him sufficient immune power. If the mother is not getting good amount of milk, then she should adopt ayurvedic medicines like Shatavari kalpa or any other methods to increase its quantity rather than giving her top feed. Intake of more milk, sprouted dry pulses, jeevanthiadi kashayam, Galactoplus powder, etc.also helps to increase breast milk.

He should also be given ayurvedic vaccination called “Suvarna prashan” and Balghuti to improve his immunity. It also helps in his physical and mental development to make him happy, healthy and intelligent.

After 3 months:
From 4th or 5th month onwards plantain fruits, apple, mango etc in form of juice or pulp can be given to the child along with the breast milk.
From 6th or 7th month onwards you can give him any fresh fruit juice once in the morning and in afternoon can give foodstuffs made from ragi/finger millet (nachni), rava, wheat, oats, sorghum (jowar), etc.in form of soup, boiled with little quantity of cow’s milk or goat’s milk and jaggery. Can also give boiled vegetable soup.

Teething phase:

When the baby starts to get teeth you can start giving him rice gruel, rava idli, rava dosa, upma, sheera, etc.should be given. Add more turmeric to the food as it acts as the best antibiotic and anticancerous too.
Along with this ayurvedic medicines like Chyawanprash, Suvarna prashan, Balghuti, Brahmi, Mandukparni, Shankhpushpi, etc. to improve health and memory power should be given as brain development is very fast during the first 5 years. By giving them these medicines, you can see the results within just 3 months only.

For those who are suffering from recurrent fever, cough and cold etc., they should consult any ayurvedic doctor as herbal preparations helps to cure these problems in a very natural way without having any adverse effects.

5 – 12 yrs age:

This is the period when brain development takes place in an active manner and memory is kept in the brain. For this, it is necessary to increase the memory absorption power of brain.

In addition to the increased dose of above medicines ArvindasavaSaraswatarishta, Brahmi ghrita, etc. also helps for good health and brain development.

If these medicines are given in early morning after bath with ‘GAYATRI MANTRA’ or ‘SARASWATI MANTRA’, then it will bring him health, happiness, peace and prosperity.
Gayatri Mantra

भुर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं !
भर्गो देवस्य धीमही, धीयो योन: प्रचोदयात !!

Saraswati Mantra

सरस्वती नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरुपीणी !
विधारंभं करिष्यामि सिध्दिर्भवतु मे सदा !!

Both mantras means “Oh! God please give me glorious intelligence which will lead me to all good things”.

After 12yrs also, throughout the education period you can give these medicines in increased dose. This will make them excellent in their field and thus will help to achieve success.

Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation and Exercise:

Kids yoga, pranayama, meditation, om chanting and any other exercises not only increases general health and immunity, but also helps to give them eternal peace, happiness and lot of positive energy.

Kids yoga can be started from 5 yrs of age. You should be very careful to choose your Kids Yoga teacher as they need to be very knowledgeable and well experienced about Kids Yoga. By following Yoga in day-to-day life will help our kid to reduce cruel and negative attitudes towards other kids, will help to make them love and respect each other and also help everyone.

(P.S: As every human being is different according to Ayurveda, all have different cures. So, kindly consult us or an Ayurveda doctor before taking any herbal medicines.)

AYURVEDA HEALS DELAYED MILESTONES

Each baby's rate of development is unique, with some babies able to smile or walk sooner or later than others. However, there are certain skill sets, known as "developmental milestones", that all babies should be able to reach within specified age ranges. Delayed milestones occur when children have not reached these milestones by the expected time period. For example, if the normal range for learning to walk is between 9 and 15 months, and a 20-month-old child has still not begun walking, this would be considered a developmental delay.

Developmental milestones of Baby:

What are the risk factors for developmental delay?

Risk factors for developmental problems fall into two categories:

  • Genetic risks: Down syndrome
  • Environmental risks: Exposure to harmful agents either before or after birth; or poor maternal nutrition or infections like Measles, HIV passed from mother to baby ; or exposure to toxins like lead, drugs, etc.
Risk factors have a cumulative impact upon development. As the number of risk factors increases, a child is put at greater risk for delayed milestones.

What are the warning signs of delayed milestones?

There are several general "warning signs" of possible delay. These include:

  • Behavioral Warning Signs
    • Does not pay attention or stay focused on an activity for as long a time as other children of the same age
    • Focuses on unusual objects for long periods of time; enjoys this more than interacting with others
    • Avoids or rarely makes eye contact with others

    • Has difficulty focusing or making eye contact
    • Closes one eye when trying to look at distant objects
    • Eyes appear to be crossed or turned
    • Brings objects too close to eyes to see
    • One or both eyes appear abnormal in size or coloring

  • Hearing Warning Signs
    • Talks in a very loud or very soft voice
    • Seems to have difficulty responding when called from across the room, even when it is for something interesting

    • Doesn't startle to loud noises
    • Ears appear small or deformed
    • Fails to develop sounds or words that would be appropriate at her age

What are early intervention services?
Early intervention services include a variety of different resources and programs that provide support to families to enhance a child's development. These services are specifically tailored to meet a child's individual needs. Services include:

BABY CARE WITH AYURVEDA

Massaging or bathing your baby is the most enjoyable moment in one's life. Massaging not only helps in improving your baby's health but also helps in the mother-child bonding. Massaging is usually followed by a bath and this is the time when you can play with your baby, sing songs, splash water, teach him new words etc. Some babies do make a tantrum as they do not like to take a bath, so it is upto you to make it the most interesting and enjoyable moment for both you and your baby.

Abhyanga (Oil Massage)
Oil massage improves complexion, promotes growth and strength. Massage at night relieves exhaustion and helps the baby to get sound sleep. Neonate and infants should be given daily oil massage with Tila oil medicated with the following herbs: Bala, Sthira, Renukabija, Lotus, Brhati, Tarkari, Mustard, Kastha, Saindhava, Asvagandha, Sahadeva, Castor, Apamarga, Kapikacchu seed and Goat's milk.
Oil drops should also be instilled in the ears and in the mastoid region daily and then covered with a cotton swab soaked in Tila oil.

The following oils are used according to the constitution of the child:

Dhoopana (Fumigation)
After bath, the baby should be exposed to the smoke of the fragrant medicines. The fumigation or dhoopan methods are mainly aimed at sterilizing the environment. Some of the dhoopan yogas are claimed to have vitalizing, enlivening and invigorating properties too.
Dhoopan is served generally by burning a combination of drugs of herbal, animal and mineral origin, in or near the place where young babies are kept. They release medicated fumes and sterilize the air for prophylactic and curative purposes.
Drugs used for dhoopan in children are different gums and oleo-resins like bedellium, cedar-gum, lacca; valerian bark; lappa root; sweet flag; margosa leaves; basil leaves; sandalwood; and animal products like snake skin, hairs, horns, dried excreta and nails of different animals.
