NEWS: 'Traditional, modern therapies together can help treat chronic ailments'

An article from The Times of India

NAGPUR: Practitioners of alternative medicine believe that using their services along with modern medicine can improve treatment of many chronic ailments. At the same time these medicos lament that due to prevailing scenario, they have been compelled to practice at modern medical facilities and prescribe allopathic drugs.

Practitioners of traditional therapies like ayurveda, unani, homeopathy and naturopathy came under one roof at Reshimbagh for an expo and seminar 'Ayushyaman Bhava'. Not only Nagpur Municipal Corporation, but several medical organizations like Ayurveda Vyaspeeth, All India Unani Tibbi Congress, International Naturopathy Organisation and Homoeopathic Integrated Medical Practitioners Association of Maharashtra supported this event. Concurrent seminars were held during the four-day exhibition to highlight basics of all the therapies. Yoga sessions were organized for the elderly and children on ailments like diabetes and asthma.

Explaining the reason behind holding this exhibition, chief organizer Jayant Dikshit said, "I visited Uttarakhand sometime ago and observed that herbal medication was a phenomenon there. I also remember how my mother would treat us for small illnesses using 'gharelu nuskhe' (home remedies) which are based on principles of ayurveda. I thought it necessary to make people aware of the alternatives to popping pills for every small discomfort."

Renowned pulse expert and a member of central government's department of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yog and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) Dr Bhandarkar said that we are failing to utilize ayurveda and other traditional therapies, which are storehouses of knowledge. "Countries like China and Japan are promoting their traditional medicines aggressively to the world but we are not doing it even in our own country. Even the primary health centres have no posts for traditional medical practitioners," he said, adding, "Things have started to change in the past few years, though."

"Many therapies like acupressure have not developed properly because 95 per cent of their practitioners are non-medicos. If people with MBBS, BAMS or BHMS degrees were to learn a bit of these therapies, they could help their patients better as every mode of treatment has its limitations," said naturopath Parag Kulkarni, who is an acupressure specialist.

Kulkarni stated this approach could help in fast recovery and an improved quality of life for the patients. "Instead of competing against each other's therapies, all healers must aim to fight diseases together," he added.

CHILD CARE AND AYURVEDA

A child with proper mental and physical health is a blessing to his home as well as society. “KAUMARA BHRITYA” is a branch of ayurveda which deals maintenance of health and treatment of different types of ailments from birth to adolescents.

From Birth to 5 yrs:

Infants (1 - 3 months):

A newborn baby doesn't have immunity to live in this earth. So, he should be given mother’s breast milk upto 1 – 2 yrs to give him sufficient immune power. If the mother is not getting good amount of milk, then she should adopt ayurvedic medicines like Shatavari kalpa or any other methods to increase its quantity rather than giving her top feed. Intake of more milk, sprouted dry pulses, jeevanthiadi kashayam, Galactoplus powder, etc.also helps to increase breast milk.

He should also be given ayurvedic vaccination called “Suvarna prashan” and Balghuti to improve his immunity. It also helps in his physical and mental development to make him happy, healthy and intelligent.

After 3 months:
From 4th or 5th month onwards plantain fruits, apple, mango etc in form of juice or pulp can be given to the child along with the breast milk.
From 6th or 7th month onwards you can give him any fresh fruit juice once in the morning and in afternoon can give foodstuffs made from ragi/finger millet (nachni), rava, wheat, oats, sorghum (jowar), etc.in form of soup, boiled with little quantity of cow’s milk or goat’s milk and jaggery. Can also give boiled vegetable soup.

Teething phase:

When the baby starts to get teeth you can start giving him rice gruel, rava idli, rava dosa, upma, sheera, etc.should be given. Add more turmeric to the food as it acts as the best antibiotic and anticancerous too.
Along with this ayurvedic medicines like Chyawanprash, Suvarna prashan, Balghuti, Brahmi, Mandukparni, Shankhpushpi, etc. to improve health and memory power should be given as brain development is very fast during the first 5 years. By giving them these medicines, you can see the results within just 3 months only.

For those who are suffering from recurrent fever, cough and cold etc., they should consult any ayurvedic doctor as herbal preparations helps to cure these problems in a very natural way without having any adverse effects.

5 – 12 yrs age:

This is the period when brain development takes place in an active manner and memory is kept in the brain. For this, it is necessary to increase the memory absorption power of brain.

In addition to the increased dose of above medicines ArvindasavaSaraswatarishta, Brahmi ghrita, etc. also helps for good health and brain development.

If these medicines are given in early morning after bath with ‘GAYATRI MANTRA’ or ‘SARASWATI MANTRA’, then it will bring him health, happiness, peace and prosperity.
Gayatri Mantra

भुर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं !
भर्गो देवस्य धीमही, धीयो योन: प्रचोदयात !!

Saraswati Mantra

सरस्वती नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरुपीणी !
विधारंभं करिष्यामि सिध्दिर्भवतु मे सदा !!

Both mantras means “Oh! God please give me glorious intelligence which will lead me to all good things”.

After 12yrs also, throughout the education period you can give these medicines in increased dose. This will make them excellent in their field and thus will help to achieve success.

Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation and Exercise:

Kids yoga, pranayama, meditation, om chanting and any other exercises not only increases general health and immunity, but also helps to give them eternal peace, happiness and lot of positive energy.

Kids yoga can be started from 5 yrs of age. You should be very careful to choose your Kids Yoga teacher as they need to be very knowledgeable and well experienced about Kids Yoga. By following Yoga in day-to-day life will help our kid to reduce cruel and negative attitudes towards other kids, will help to make them love and respect each other and also help everyone.
